Become an Everyday Champion with Citizen Advocacy

We believe that friendship should be available to everybody and that isolation can be reduced. And we’re working towards these goals one person at a time.

With Citizen Advocacy, you make your own schedule, pick your own activities and enjoy complete flexibility around work, family and social activities in your home area. You can volunteer on your own, or include your family and friends!

We are looking for people to become a champion to a youth, an adult or a senior who is looking for friendship or maybe some practical assistance. It is as simple as going for a walk, playing cards, watching a hockey game, or just sharing a cup of coffee; the sorts of things you would do anyway with your friends. We ask that you meet with your match 3 or 4 times a month to do activities that you both enjoy. Volunteers are matched to men or women who are isolated because of age or disability.

No special skills are needed, just the ability to be a friend and a commitment to maintain the match for 12 months. Orientation, training and ongoing support are provided.

For the person with a disability, being matched results in increased self-esteem, higher participation in community life and a reduction in isolation. They feel accepted for who they are.

There are over 250 men and women across Ottawa waiting an average of three years to be matched with a volunteer. We’d like to reduce those numbers, so that nobody’s lonely or isolated as they have a friend. We’re looking for volunteers, aged 18 plus, all across the city.
